01

Best for a first visit

Myeongdong

The easiest of the three to understand on a first trip: central, familiar and built around short sightseeing days.

Where to stay in Seoul: Myeongdong-inspired shopping district
Trip styleFirst-time Seoul
Best stationMyeongdong
Area feelCentral + busy

Myeongdong works best when your Seoul itinerary is built around the city’s classic center. Shopping is on the doorstep, while City Hall, Namdaemun, Namsan, Jongno and the palace district are all relatively easy to combine into the same day.

The practical advantage is not that Myeongdong is the most exciting neighborhood in Seoul. It is that it reduces friction. For a short first visit, that can matter more than staying somewhere trendier.

Where to stay
01

Myeongdong Station

Choose this for Line 4 and the most straightforward access to the core shopping district.

02

Euljiro 1-ga

A stronger option if Line 2 matters and you prefer staying just outside the busiest pedestrian streets.

03

Outer Myeongdong

Useful if you want central access but a quieter walk back at night.

Best for
  • First-time visitors
  • Short 3–4 night trips
  • Shopping and classic sightseeing
Watch out for
  • Heavy pedestrian traffic
  • Less neighborhood character
  • Can feel tourist-oriented
02

Best for nightlife

Hongdae

Younger, later and more spontaneous. Hongdae is the choice when cafés, nightlife and a lively street atmosphere matter as much as sightseeing.

Trip styleNightlife + cafés
Best stationHongik Univ.
Area feelYoung + creative

Hongdae feels less like a sightseeing base and more like a neighborhood you actively spend time in. Cafés, small shops, music venues and late-night food make it easy to stay out without planning every hour.

Its other major advantage is arrival. Hongik University Station is served by the Airport Railroad, which makes the first and last day of a trip especially simple when you are carrying luggage.

Where to stay
01

Hongik Univ. Station

Best for the simplest airport-rail connection and an easy first arrival.

02

Yeonnam-dong

A calmer café-and-neighborhood feel while still being walkable to Hongdae.

03

Main nightlife streets

Choose this only if late-night energy is a priority and street noise is acceptable.

Best for
  • Nightlife and cafés
  • Solo and younger travelers
  • Airport Railroad convenience
Watch out for
  • Noise on busy streets
  • Crowds on weekends
  • Less efficient for southern Seoul
03

Best for modern Seoul

Gangnam

Polished, commercial and spread out. Gangnam suits travelers whose plans are already focused on southern Seoul.

Trip styleBusiness + dining
Best stationGangnam / Samseong
Area feelModern + upscale

Gangnam is not the automatic choice for a first sightseeing trip, but it becomes much more logical when your schedule is centered on COEX, Jamsil, Apgujeong, Cheongdam or business meetings in southern Seoul.

The district offers excellent dining, shopping and modern city infrastructure, but the trade-off is distance. Repeated trips to the palace district or north-central Seoul can add unnecessary travel time.

Where to stay
01

Gangnam Station

Best for Line 2, restaurants and a high-energy commercial district.

02

Samseong / COEX

The practical choice for conventions, business and eastern Gangnam.

03

Apgujeong / Cheongdam

Better for luxury retail, dining and a lifestyle-focused stay.

Best for
  • Business travel
  • Upscale dining and shopping
  • Plans centered on south Seoul
Watch out for
  • Longer trips to old Seoul
  • Area is geographically large
  • Less convenient for first-time sightseeing

Practical planning

Three questions to ask before you book.

01 / Airport

How are you arriving?

If a simple airport-rail arrival matters, Hongdae has the clearest advantage. For Myeongdong and Gangnam, compare the full door-to-door route rather than the district name.

02 / Time

How long is the trip?

On a short first visit, centrality usually matters more. On a longer or repeat trip, choosing the neighborhood you actually enjoy spending time in becomes more important.

03 / Nights

Where will your evenings end?

Think about the last journey of the day. A hotel near your late-night plans can be more useful than one that only looks central on a map.

Final verdict

Choose the neighborhood that matches the trip, not the reputation.

Our default picks
  • Myeongdong — first visit, classic sightseeing, short stay
  • Hongdae — nightlife, cafés, younger energy, airport rail
  • Gangnam — business, COEX, upscale dining, south-Seoul plans
One last rule
  • Choose the exact station before the district.
  • Check the final 5–10 minute walk to the hotel.
  • For nightlife streets, read recent noise reviews.
